Helen's Barn: A Half Century of Music and Dance, 1932-1984
The highlight of a Highlands summer was the excellent fiddling, buck dancing, and clogging found only at Helen’s Barn. Tickets to the dances cost 25¢ with upwards of 100 people in attendance. Off season dances for locals were free. In winter, a pot bellied stove—and lots of energetic movement—ensured that everyone kept warm.
Honoring the Highlands traditions of how many local spent their summer nights for decades with evening filled with clogging and square dancing to the sweet sounds of mountain string bands in Helen's Barn, Loretta Law will lead a youth clogging group performance and adult clogging groups from Mountain City Playhouse will be performing in the parking lot adjacent to the former Helen's Barn (Asia House) between 1:00-3:00pm.
Storytelling and a presentation of the history of Helen's Barn will take place from 5:00-6:00
